A total of 4.89 billion domestic trips were made in China in 2023, marking a year-on-year increase of 93 percent, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Friday. Among them, the number of trips by urban residents was 3.75 billion, a year-on-year rise of 95 percent. The number of trips made by rural residents was 1.13 billion, increasing nearly 90 percent year-on-year. In 2023, the total expenditure of domestic tourists was 4.91 trillion yuan ($683 billion), a growth of 140 percent year-on-year. Among them, urban residents' travel expenditure was 4.18 trillion yuan, almost 150 percent up from the previous year.
